Scope of Practice:

The assessment of emotional, mental and physical disorders using natural medicine techniques to promote, maintain and restore health and wellness.

  • Clinical Nutrition - the use of specific diets and nutritional supplements to prevent disease or re-establish the body chemistry.
  • Botanical and Herbal Remedies - use for their balancing and nutritional value.
  • Electropathy - Micro-dose of natural substances aimed at stimulating the self healing response without side effects and could include the science of Homeopathy.
  • Physical Medicine - therapeutic manipulation of soft tissue, exercises, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, ultrasound and heat and cold therapy.
  • Ayurveda and Indian Systems of Healing - a wholistic system of proprietary medicine that uses a constitutional model to provide guidance regarding dietary and lifestyle management.
  • Lifestyle Counselling and Stress Management - Natural Medicine Practitioners are especially trained to offer coaching and education to the client on stress management, hypnotherapy, biofeedback as well as environmental factors that affect their health. 

RNP® Registered Naturotherapy Practitioner®-Member of EBNMP CANADA

A multidisciplinary group of practitioners who use make use of natural healing agents and therapies in the treatment of health conditions and must be under the guidance of a DNM® or other regulated health professional.

Scope of Practice:

The promotion of health and wellness as prescribed by a regulated health professional (ND, DC) or DNM®. RNP® may be referred to as Complimentary Alternative Medicine (CAM) practitioners.

  • Nutrition - the use of specific diets and nutritional supplements to prevent disease or re-establish the body chemistry.
  • Botanical and Herbal Remedies - used for their balancing and nutritional value.
  • Physical Therapy - Exercises, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, ultrasound and heat and cold therapy.
  • Lifestyle & Stress Management - Education to the client on nutritional balancing, stress management as well as environmental factors that affect their health.

EBNMP Canada™ strongly adheres to the principle that DNM®s are not "Allopathic Medical Doctors", but they are trained to recognize conditions that are beyond their Scope of Practice and must refer clients to an "Allopathic Medical Doctor" or other appropriate healthcare practitioner when necessary.

GOCC Standards of Membership

Membership in the GOCC and GOCCOS has the following requirements:

  • 3000 Curriculum Hours (Includes 1000 hrs Clinical Internship) in Osteopathic Manual Practice;
  • Anatomy / Physiology / Pathology diplomas

A registered Osteopath  Manual Practitioner works with one of the following:

1. Evaluation - Direct Examination & Treatment

2. Differential Diagnosis - Obtained in writing or by phone

3. Direct Referral from a Medical Doctor, Naturopath, Doctorate of Natural Medicine® (DNM®), Dentist,

Chiropractor, or Podiatrist

4. Or a combination of any of the above

 Osteopathic Manual Practice: Scope of Practice

Osteopathic practice also includes:

Osteopathic practice means the evaluation of persons with connective tissue disorders, which include injuries of the musculo-skeletal, circulatory and nervous systems, through the use of Osteopathic case history and palpation or treatment of persons by the use of connective tissue manipulation, therapeutic and rehabilitative exercise, postural  counseling, nutritional counseling, and the use of the effective properties of physical measures of heat, cold, light, water, radiant energy, electricity, sound and air, and assistive devices for the purpose of preventing, correcting, or alleviating a physical disability.

Osteopathic practice includes, but is not limited to, the treatment of contractures, muscle spasms, inflammation, scar tissue formation, adhesions, lesions, laxity, hypotonicity, rigidity, structural imbalance, bruising, contusions, muscular atrophy, and partial separation of connective tissue fibers.

(a) performance of specialized tests and measurements,

(b) administration of specialized treatment procedures,

(c) interpretation of referrals from licensed physicians, dentists, podiatrists, etc,

(d) establishment and modification of Osteopathic treatment programs, and

(e) supervision or teaching of Osteopathy.

Osteopathic manual practices does not include radiology, surgery, pharmacology, invasive diagnostic testing, or determination of a differential diagnosis; provided, however, the limitation on determining a differential diagnosis. Shall not in any manner limit a registered Osteopathic Manual Practitioner from performing an evaluation within his scope of practice.

A Registered Osteopathic Manual Practitioner is not a physio-therapist and shall not hold himself out to be qualified to provide physiotherapy services unless he is educated and otherwise licensed to perform this service. A registered Osteopathic Manual Practitioner shall refer to a licensed physician, dentist, or podiatrist any patient whose medical condition should, at the time of evaluation or treatment, be determined to be beyond the scope of practice of the Osteopathic Manual Therapy.
